“BtN Electricty”

Before you start reading this reflection I would just like to say that I accidentally did another BtN reflection this week (this one!) without realizing this was the one I had to do for homework… so here is my real homework…

Red is Facts

Green is Questions

Blue is an insight

Black is Summary

This video was about when Stephen Gray figured out about insulators and conductors of electricity.

The first fact I found is Stephen figured out that some materials let electricity pass and some didn’t. He called them ‘insulators’ and ‘conductors’. Insulators held the electricity in them and wouldn’t let it move, like the silk or hair. Whereas conductors allowed electricity to flow through them, like most metals.

Also, the Hauksbee machine is a machine used for generating static electricity, the kind that puffs up your hair when you rub a balloon on it.

As well as Stephen Gray presented the difference between insulators and conductors nearly 300 years ago!

Something I’m wondering is hat would the world be like with out electricity?

An insight I had is that electricity has been around for a while.

Finally, I’m also wondering did it hurt the orphan boy he demonstrated on when he demonstrated insulators and conductors?

BtN “History of the Alphabet”

Red is Facts

Green is Questions

Blue is an insight

Black is Summary

This video is about the history of the English alphabet and why it is how it is today.

An Insight I had was the Greek alphabet and the English alphabet sound similar, not just because of the first letter of the English translation is also similar. To me, the actual letters sound quite similar too.

A question I have is why is the English language so similar to so many other languages? English has words that are based off Latin words and Greek words and I’m sure we borrowed words from all over the place!

The first fact I found is The Phoenicians are ancient humans and they lived here in the Mediterranean around 3500 years ago.

Also The ancestors I mentioned before had an alphabet that similar to the one we have today.

Finally, When the Greek started using the Phoenician’s alphabet many, many years ago they added in the vowels.

Another question I had (even if it’s not really part of the BtN!) is why a “Y” sometimes counted as a vowel but sometimes not? It gets quite confusing in class in the younger grades when you have to name the vowels and things like that!

100wc “The end”

The red sand burned my feet but I kept running. The main road was minutes away, so was the end. “Wait!” Someone yelled. I used to know them but in a minute I won’t. A rock had foiled my plans. I face planted. He grabbed at my every move, I thought I could escape him! “So, what lies ahead of you? Fool!” I couldn’t speak. Seconds away from the busy road I needed it all to end. I hurled myself closer… closer to the end… It was at my fingertips, water. The man ran as a police car went after him and I had found the end, of thirst.

BtN “Spacesuit History”

Red is Facts

Green is a Questions

Blue is insight

Black is Summary

This video is about the new design in space suits created by Elon Musk (who is the founder of a company called SpaceX)  and what they need to be able to be reliable and durable to last in outer space.

An insight I had was it must be so heavy (on earth because it’s weightless in space) to be wearing these incredible suits. I can’t in a million years imagine what it would be like wearing up to 80 kilograms, I thought our school bags were heavy!

A question I had about this video was why would they spend all their time and money to make all the suits look better when they could just make them more strong and effective? I mean they’re floating in space,     all the other humans are on earth! What I thought the answer was, was that maybe they wanted to have some fun with the situation of going into space.

Another question I had was what do they make the spacesuits out of? Because they are very complicated and heavy as I said before.

The three facts that I found in the video (below) were about all the different requirements that the spacesuits would need because there were (in my opinion) a lot. To start they have to protect astronauts from extreme heat and cold. So the spacesuits come with built in air conditioning and heating.

Also the spacesuits come with built adult nappies for obvious reasons.

They clearly air supply and a gold visor provides eye protection from the radiation in space.

100wc #8 “The Search Begins…”

“30th October: I have finally found some footsteps of the strange creature! I will follow them tomorrow.” The rescue team went looking for a lost explorer called Olivia and that was the last entry in her diary. The rescue team followed a map they found despite the bitter cold and all kinds of fear. “Look James,” Bob shouted, “A shoe! I think it’s her’s!”

“Don’t be ridiculous Bob! BOB?” James’ heart was pounding but so was the monsters fist on his own chest. The roar was surprisingly familiar. Olivia ripped off the head off the costume. “Happy Halloween Fools!” She has never laughed so hard in her life.

100wc #7 “The storm.”

Emily laid there on her bed rummaging through her brain trying to find a trace of an idea. Nothing. She needed to think of something that would distract her from the storm. Yes! She thought. I have an idea! She tip-toed past into her room but the unthinkable had happened. “0%! NO!… The battery was flat!” Her mind was racing, what was she going to do? Then suddenly her mind went dark just like the gloomy weather outside. What if she read a book? No! Emily couldn’t bring herself to such a tragedy in life. So, for the first time in her life, she got a little thing called boredom.

100wc #6 “Metaphorically”

“Today we will be learning about metaphors!” Cato raised his hand and pulled wierd faces. “Yes… Cato…” The teacher sighed. “Did you know that-” Cato started. “Yes Cato, we did know that Cato in latin is smart. Please just put your hand down… Metaphors are where you say something but the meaning isn’t literal. Mia,” The teacher shouted at Mia. “Describe something as a metaphor!” The teacher’s wicked finger was pointing yet again. Mia hates it when that happens. “Umm…” She thought. Mia had to think of something. “As it came rushing towards us, I tackled it and did it right!” Mia wished to herself that sometimes metaphors were real…

100wc #5 “The Shark Tour”

“And to your right is Seal Cove, where we will be stopping off!” The tour guide said cheerfully. It was as if the boat were rocking in time with my head. I was sea sick, and shark sick. “Excuse me, but is that a… a… shark…?”

“Why, certainly not,” He chuckled, it was so not funny. “Or, maybe…” The driver lurched forward and then rocketed off. The screams burned my ears so bad even the consistent water spray at me couldn’t cool or calm me down.

Mission Accomplished! The seal thought, That’ll teach them for going near my home! He laughed watching them drive off terrified into the distance…

100wc #4 “My sister”

Finally! I finished watering the garden and must get on my computer before it’s too late. I run towards it my muscles aching then I lunge at it wasting no time but out of nowhere a way too familiar hand appeared and took it way. “Get back here you annoying sister!” I roared my face turning a scarlet color. She threw cushions at my face but I didn’t care. I dashed into her room and I took it! My sister gave me one look. No, don’t do it! She screeched her violin it as hard as she could only then did I realize that I took her computer, not mine.

BtN “Dog Sled”

Red is Facts

Purple is Prior Knowledge

Green is a Questions

Blue is insight

Black is Summary

This Behind the News video was about dogs (pets) that were originally from colder climates that are in Australia to race against other dogs while pulling a human along on a scooter.

I have a lot of prior knowledge for this topic as I have a pet Siberian Husky. I can imagine trying to race her and she would be so excited she would go insane! I’m guessing these dogs have had some training done to prevent what my dog would do. I also know that it is very hard to train Siberian Huskies because they are very stubborn and I think that’s the same for other sled dogs too.

The person riding the dog is called the “Musher” because MUSH! is what Eskimo’s yell to the snow dogs to get them running or in most cases to pull sleds that often carry the people and their supplies. The Eskimos used these dogs almost like camels were used in the Arabian desert just in the snow.

Some people can chose to race with up to six dogs depending on how the dogs were trained and how confident the rider is with them.

The dogs are often Siberian Huskies or Alaskan Malamutes and in this particular race they race against each other in the Australian outback. These aren’t the places/climates the dogs are used to but they are trained to still run as best as they can.

I must be very scary to just let your crazy dog pull you around through puddles and forests without you have very much control at all of what’s going on.

Somethings I’m wondering about is do they have separate races for the different breeds of dog? And how do they possibly train there dogs to be that well behaved?!
