“BtN Electricty”

Before you start reading this reflection I would just like to say that I accidentally did another BtN reflection this week (this one!) without realizing this was the one I had to do for homework… so here is my real homework…

This video was about when Stephen Gray figured out about insulators and conductors of electricity.

The first fact I found is Stephen figured out that some materials let electricity pass and some didn’t. He called them ‘insulators’ and ‘conductors’. Insulators held the electricity in them and wouldn’t let it move, like the silk or hair. Whereas conductors allowed electricity to flow through them, like most metals.

Also, the Hauksbee machine is a machine used for generating static electricity, the kind that puffs up your hair when you rub a balloon on it.

As well as Stephen Gray presented the difference between insulators and conductors nearly 300 years ago!

Something I’m wondering is hat would the world be like with out electricity? 

An insight I had is that electricity has been around for a while.

Finally, I’m also wondering did it hurt the orphan boy he demonstrated on when he demonstrated insulators and conductors?

Old man Saltbush Project Reflection

This term (term 2) the class was put into partners and assigned a plant or animal to do an information report on. Harguan and I did an adaptations project on the Old Man saltbush. This is our final and finished version of our presentation. I feel that our partnership was very successful and that we worked very well together. Overall, according to the rubric nearly our whole project is in “Above expectations” which is a great thing for us to achieve this term.

Three facts I found interesting or surprising were that the Old man saltbush grows better and quicker over the warmer months which is often the opposite of the normal behavior of other plants. The fact that I probably found most interesting was that the Old Man Saltbush had female and male flowers. Finally another surprising fact was that leaves are about 28% salt! They are this salty because over time they have adapted to living in the salty soils.

Two understandings I had was that the Old Man saltbush (or anything else that lives in a specific environment) would have lived there for a long time to be able to adapt to its environment so well. Also, in an experiment, to make it fair everything has to be the same except for the thing that you’re testing.

Something I’m wondering is how do living thing know how and why they should evolve (adapt) to a new or existing environment?

The most important thing that I learnt was to believe in your partner. For example if you’re doing a project and you need you’re partner to bring in some paint for a picture. Unless they said something like “I can’t get paint,” You should yet them do it because if you don’t then they will just expect that you (or others) will always do stuff for them.

I learned that when we decided that we were going to do a digital 3D model. We needed program to make our model and she said that her friend had a good one so I trusted her and it worked! Our 3D model was very successful and it engaged the class.

What am I going to do with what I have learnt is probably do the same thing in future projects and other assignments in the future.

In Conclusion this term’s project was very successful and we worked well with each other, I enjoyed it and we both learned a lot of different and useful information that we can use in the future.

Homework Video

This video was about when the Australian Federation happened and when/how Australia became how it is today. Some facts I learned were that in the 1850s there were six colonies and they were like 6 countries. On the 1st of January 1901 the colonies joined together. In 1642 a dutch explorer found Tasmania and in 1770 captain James Cook claimed a chunk of Australia for Britain. An insight I had was that it must be tough for the people who couldn’t vote for who they wanted to run their country. Some questions I had were when were the northern territory and the ACT added to Australia? And why did they call Australia,  Australia?

2017 Camp Reflection

This year we went to Cape Bridgewater Coastal Camp and it was absolutely amazing. Every day we woke to a stunning view of Bridgewater Bay. You would think you’re in paradise, it looks so unreal like something you’d get off a postcard or an animation. It was one of the best beaches I have ever seen!

We did lots of fun activities on camp like a 13m abseil, snorkelling but by far my favourite was the seal tour I remember it like it was yesterday… Jumping into the speed boat and hearing the boys chant “DONUT! DONUT! DONUT!”. Then having the fresh seawater sprayed in my face as the boat went round and round. My heart thumping as I held on to the side of the boat to stop me from falling out into the sea around me. The driver knew we were having fun and he sped up the boat when we went over big waves and we were airborne!

 

Finally we got to where the two seal colonies lived and they were all adorable.  The seal pups (babies) came up to the boat because they probably wanted to play with us and our boat. They looked and acted like part dog part dolphin animals which some of them were asleep on the rocks and others were playing and swimming.

We also went inside a cave where some seals also lived we had to be quiet inside there because the noise echoed in there and they were all asleep. The seal tour was the best activity of them all.

BtN “First Fleet” and My Place “The Encounter”

The BtN video was about how the convicts would have felt coming to Australia. Three facts I learnt were that more than 700 people were packed onto the crowded ships. And that on the 19th of January the first ships arrived in Botany Bay. Seven days later the ships found a place to anchor and Arthur Philip planted a British flag in Sydney Cove. I also learned that Britain had colonies in America but then the Americans rose up against the English so it was no longer an place to send convicts. One insight I had was that it must be very disgusting stuffed into those damp and crowded ships. Something I’m wondering is why was most people in England at that time so poor?

The My Place video was about what the Aboriginals thought when they first saw a cow and the English people. Three facts I learned were that when the Aboriginals called the English people the “Ghost People”. And that they had never seen a cow before so they were confused about what it was and they called it a big monster. They also said that the smoke kept the mosquitoes away from them and the camps that they lived on. One insight I had was that he English people must have been just as confused as the aboriginals were. Something I’m wondering was why were the soldiers marching with a little boy in front of them with a drum?

Safer Internet Day

Today was Safer Internet Day and all of Victoria’s schools participated in a webinar on how we can stay safe online.  It included information on how to keep your  details private online, this included things on the dangers of strangers online, how to prevent bullying and what to do if you do get bullied. During the webinar it gave us opportunity’s to answer questions though a chat. We found out that half of our group had been contacted by strangers online. Some of the things they said were tell a trusted adult and report anything that makes you feel bad and keep any evidence so they can can work out who did it.  I already tell a trusted adult if anything upsetting things happen online. A goal for future internet use would be to be mindful which websites I go on and which ones I think aren’t helpful.

Semester 2 Goal Reflection

My goals for semester 2 are in bold and my reflections are underneath.

I would like to work on my handwriting being easy to read and being more organised with my things.

I think it improved a bit but I could still work on it.

I would like to learn lot’s things about physics, chemical notation for things and state of matter and other things relating to chemistry.

I learnt a lot about physics, chemical notation for things and states of matter in our intergrated unit.

I would also like to work on making my writing not always a narrative.

We worked a lot on information texts and presuasive texts but we didn’t do much narrative writing.

In maths I want to work on percentages, decimals and square roots.

We worked on decimals a lot and percentages a little, but we didn’t work on square roots. I have learnt a lot about decimals.

Next semester I also want to work on using harder words in my writing so I’m not using the same words over and over again.

The Ancient Study of Astronomy

I watched an interesting video on The Ancient Study of Astronomy and this is my reflection. Three facts I learnt were that the Mayans, Ancient Greek and the Babylonians were acknowledged for their discoveries around the solar system. Babylon city state is located near modern Bahgdad. The ancient Greeks came up with the Precession of the Equinoxes. An understanding I had were that the people of the ancient times were very good at astronomy.  Two things I’m wondering is how did the ancient greeks come up with the Precession of the Equinoxes? How can the ancient people work all these discoveries out?

Term 3 Intergrated Unit Reflection

This term I learnt there are many different types of natural disasters including: bushfires, cyclones, tornadoes,  floods, tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Each and everyone of them cause destruction to the places they hit but some of them you can prepare for. In this science unit we learnt about extreme weather (natural disasters). Some facts I found interesting were that the more you prepare your property, the better the chance it will survive a bushfire, even if you aren’t there. Swan Hill, Baimsdale, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Portland, Hamilton and Horsham all are places in Victoria which are very prone to bushfires. Finally, without the old bark and twigs there is nothing sustainable for the fire to burn, without this fuel the bushfire cannot start. Two understandings I had were that there are some bad things about preparing for a bushfire but it is still a very good idea to do so and a few types of natural disasters are common in Australia. Something I’m wondering is when was the last time that someone discovered a new type of natural disaster.

 

My learning throughout the unit has grown rapidly. Now I know much more than I did when I first began this unit where I didn’t know much at all about the topic and now I have grown to knowing lot more about the unit. This is the same whether I am with the whole class or working in smaller groups or even on my own with my information report. Like when I was working on information report I used information cards to records facts, not only did I learn about the topic, but  I also learnt efficient ways to organise them, etc. I think the most important thing I have learnt would be how to work together better in a group and to summarise all my notes and be able to look back on them and understand what they mean. I learned that when were split into groups and we researched a different area in the natural disaster that we looking at and then got together and summarised all our notes and presented the summary to the class. What I am going to with this knowledge would be if I am in a lesson in the future and I’m taking notes, I can summarise my notes and then understand them when I need to look back on them.

In my assessment matrix I covered everything that was required to do very well and I also included a synthesis which wasn’t required but I included it too. Most of the criteria I was very confident that I had it but a few things I was kind of sure about. Here are my unit goals I set at the beginning of this term and if I had achieved them.

I will understand key extreme weather terms, including: Mantle, Ring of fire, Epicentre, Mid-ocean ridges, Astronomy and Wind erosion.                                                   I now understand the terms: Mantle, Ring of Fire, Epicentre and Astronamy. The others I am still not sure about.

I will understand that sudden geological changes or extreme weather conditions can affect Earth’s surface.                                                                                                                                  I understand that weather conditions can affect Earth’s surface by flooding (washing away things), fire (burning trees and other objects) and many other different sudden geological changes.

I will understand scientific understandings, discoveries and inventions are used to solve problems that directly affect peoples’ lives.                                                                                         I understand things like a Seismometer can detect foreshocks to determine whether a major earthquake is coming.

I will compare data with predictions and use evidence in developing explanations.              I can compare data with predictions and use evidence to develop explanations for different situations.

I will identify and explain how analytical images like figures, tables, diagrams, maps and graphs contribute to our understanding of verbal information in factual and persuasive texts                                                                                                                                                           These features can help you when you just want to glance at something and see some specific facts because they make it easier to see for example putting it in bold.

I will plan, draft and publish imaginative, informative and persuasive texts, choosing and experimenting with text structures, language features, images and digital resources appropriate to purpose and audience

I have achieved this goal because now can plan, draft and publish different types of texts by choosing and experimenting with text structures, language features, images and digital resources for appropriate audiences.

Make sure my book work is a lot neater and is easier to read.

I have tried to achieve this goal and I think I have but I am not 100% sure.

Camp Response “The Noisy Host”

“Today on MTVN we have a very special guest joining us, the survivor of the massive Questacon earthquake!” The noisy host of Mega Television News boomed. I was pushed by someone into the blinding light of the stage. As I stumbled on squinting, I sat next to the loud host. I struggled to remember any earthquakes that I had been in, then it hit me, I hadn’t been in any earthquakes, ever.

“So Chiara, what was it like to be in Australia’s first ever Megaquake?” The host said loudly into the microphone. The camera zoomed in on my face. “What earthquake?” I squeaked. The whole studio went silent. A minute had passed and no-one had spoken (not even the host!) until I said, “That megaquake was a really good simulator, no damage was done and no-one was killed,”       “Umm… Ha, ha! Of course I knew that little girl. So, err, what was it like in the… simulator?”

“Well, I remember being thrown around by the forces of the realistic simulator!” Cameras were clicking everywhere, this was more like it. Enjoying the spotlight I continued on and got the hang of dramatising things. “That’s not all that was at Questacon, I have much more to tell you like the 7 metres high slide and the amazing-”                                                                                          “And that’s all we’ve got time for today on MTVN! Cut, cut, cut. I don’t want to be a MTVN presenter anymore… LET’S GO TO QUESTACON!” The host yelled for the last time as he happily jumped on a 10 hour bus ride and that was the end of the peace inside Questacon forever.
